It transfers the force from the brake lever (slack adjuster) directly to the brake shoes. Construction and function of the S-cam in the braking system
The S-cam is a hardened shaft ending in a characteristic head (S-cam) which, as it rotates, pushes the rollers of the brake shoes apart.
